Recently, Artur Zdunek shared fascinating insights into the 3D printing of biomaterials inspired by plant cell walls! Artur delivered an invited lecture at the annual Workshop for Young Scientists, held at the Instytut Agrofizyki PAN / Institute of Agrophysics, PAS on Nov 18-19, 2024.
Artur’s latest research is part of the recent OPUS25 program, supported by the NCN National Science Centre (grant No. 2023/49/B/NZ9/02979). Recent advancements demonstrate that plastics used in 3D printing can be replaced with more sustainable and environmentally friendly ingredients, including plant cell wall polysaccharides. However, current research on 3D printing using plant cell wall components is limited to single or binary systems, which do not fully exploit the potential of the natural structure of plant cell walls. Thus, the main scientific challenges of this project involve reusing cellulose, hemicellulose, and pectin to develop 3D printing ink formulations that allow for achieving diverse mechanical properties in printed materials.
The Workshop for Young Scientists is an annual event for early-career researchers in agricultural and natural sciences, with a special focus on the agricultural environment.
